By default when you install new Android Studio it will run the Emulator on the sidebar where it's attached to the main Android Studio window. This is not that great by default so we to Launch Android Emulator on New Window / Separate Window you can make use of the Settings.

To enable the setting you have to visit the Tools > Emulator and then uncheck the "Launch in a tool window" option. By doing that your emulator will launch in a new separate window.
